Discovering God’s Provision: A Lesson from Ducks by the Pond

Finding Provision in Unlikely Places: A Lesson from Ducks by the Pond

In 2012, I underwent a major surgery that required at least six to eight weeks of recovery. During this time, one of my favorite activities was enjoying the serene view of the pond from the comfort of my recliner. It was during one of these peaceful moments that I observed a profound lesson in provision.

One day, I noticed a gentleman had come to feed the ducks. This seemed to be a customary routine for him, as he appeared neither lost nor worried. The ducks that were nearby quickly gathered around him, eagerly feeding on whatever he threw to the ground. Meanwhile, other ducks, unaware of the free meal, continued to search for food on land and in the pond.

After a short while, a couple of those distant ducks noticed the commotion and realized there was free food available if they simply moved closer. As soon as they figured this out, they flocked to where the man was, joining the others in the feast.

This scene brought to mind the scripture from 1 Kings 17:4-6, where God told Elijah to go to the Kerith Ravine. It was there that the ravens would feed him:

“You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.”

God’s provision was waiting for Elijah “there”. Similarly, we must be positioned for His provision. Your “there” might be different from my “there”, but the principle remains the same. We need to be ready to move from “here” to “there” to receive what God has prepared for us.

Consider leaving your current place of comfort or routine and moving towards your “there”. Just like the ducks who discovered a bountiful meal by shifting their position, our provision awaits us when we are willing to follow God’s direction and trust His timing.

Let this simple observation remind you to stay attentive and open to God’s leading. His provision is often found in the most unlikely places.

When television was young, there was a hugely popular show based on the still popular fictional character of Superman.
